Legal Overview

Michigan legalized online casinos and sports betting in late 2019 (launched January 2021). Michigan Gaming Control Board issued enforcement orders against 9 sweepstakes operators in early 2026. Sweepstakes casinos officially illegal as of 2023-2026.

Online Casino Legal Status in Michigan

Michigan has fully licensed online casino gambling. The Lawful Internet Gaming Act was signed in December 2019, and licensed online casino games launched January 22, 2021. The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) licenses and regulates all online casino and sports betting operators in the state.

Licensed MI online casino operators include BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars Palace Online Casino, BetRivers, Golden Nugget, and tribal operators including Firekeepers Casino Hotel, Little Creek Casino, and others. Michigan residents 21+ (18+ at tribal casinos) can play licensed online slots, table games, and live dealer. The MI iGaming market is consistently among the top 3 US markets by monthly revenue.

Sweepstakes Casinos in Michigan

Sweepstakes casinos are not legally available to Michigan residents. The Michigan Gaming Control Board issued cease-and-desist enforcement orders against multiple sweepstakes casino operators in 2026, citing that the dual-currency model (Gold Coins/Sweeps Coins with cash redemptions) constitutes illegal gambling under Michigan law. The MGCB position is that prize redemptions make sweepstakes platforms legally equivalent to unlicensed online casinos.

As a result, the major sweepstakes platforms do not accept Michigan registrations. Michigan residents who want casino-style gaming should use one of the MGCB-licensed online casino platforms, which offer a fully regulated and player-protected alternative.

Sports Betting in Michigan

Michigan online sports betting also launched in January 2021, alongside the online casino market. The MGCB licenses and regulates all sportsbook operators. Licensed MI sportsbooks include DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, BetRivers, PointsBet, WynnBet, and several tribal-licensed operators.

Retail sports betting is available at the three Detroit commercial casinos (MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, Greektown Casino Hotel) and at tribal gaming facilities across the state. All licensed operators require age 21+ for commercial casinos; some tribal sportsbooks allow age 18+.

What Michigan Players Should Know

Michigan has one of the most comprehensive legal online gambling frameworks in the US — online slots, table games, live dealer, poker, and sports betting are all available through licensed operators. The MGCB maintains a registry of licensed operators at michigan.gov/mgcb.

Sweepstakes platforms are not an option for Michigan residents under current enforcement. If you receive an advertisement for a sweepstakes casino claiming to accept MI players, treat it skeptically — the MGCB enforcement position makes operating in Michigan a legal risk for those operators.
